Schoenau, Haut-Rhin. Lancaster LL-801

On 27th April 1944, at 21.44h, Lancaster LL-801 left Mildenhall, Suffolk for Friedrichshafen. It was shot down by a night fighter and crashed close to the Rhine near a little Alsacien village called Schœnau. Four crew were killed, two Sergeants and two Flight Sergeants. The pilot escaped and another Sergeant was taken prisoner and interned in Stalag Luft V1 / Stalag 357 in Lithuania. The dead RAF crew are buried in the churchyard in Schœnau.
