Riesenkopf: Halifax MZ-807. A cyclist passes the memorial

On the night of 2nd/3rd December, 1944, Halifax MZ807 was one of 503 planes on a successful mission to bomb Hagen, Germany. Return conditions were atrocious, with dense fog and planes encumbered by heavy icing. MZ807 lost its right engine and crashed into the side of Riesenkopf, a mountain behind Soultz Haut-Rhin, Alsace, Six crew members died and one survived. The memorial to the crew is a magnificent stone on the D431 at the exact site of the crash.
