St-Hippolyte: Lancaster ND-781
Lancaster ND-781 left Mildenhall for Friedrichshafen at 21.50h on 27 April and it was attacked over the eastern Vosges. The Lancaster came down in flames from 17000 feet, the pilot facing certain death by keeping it in the air long enough for the crew to bail out. He was found dead in his plane and the crew were captured. The crash site is close to the village of St-Hippolyte, 68.
